I Faces of King's English I

Managing Director Susan King
Hello, I am Susan and I have lived in Singapore since January 2001. I am originally from England and grew up in the county of Kent but eventually moved to the City of Leeds to study.

Teaching was something that I had always dreamed of doing, and I was thrilled when I obtained my first teaching position in a Grammar School. I taught O' and A' level subjects for a few years before joining a specialist team of teachers who were sent into schools throughout Leeds to teach a variety of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. I enjoyed teaching children of all ages, in every type of school at Primary, Middle and High School levels.

I have held several positions of responsibility during the course of my career, including School Governor, Head of English and Staff Tutor. I was delighted when the teachers of Leeds schools voted for me to be the teacher representative for the City of Leeds on the Education Committee.

I have taught children from three to 18 years of age, lectured undergraduates at University level and taught adults too. For five years, as a training officer for adult classes, I trained volunteers for Victim Support, a voluntary organisation helping the victims of crime. I eventually became Chairwoman of Victim Support in Leeds.

I have taught English in Singapore since 2001. In 2003, I set up King's English where teaching is our passion. We want to help as many people as possible speak good English and understand it too. It is my desire to make our lessons as much fun as we can for students. The philosophy of King's English is to provide children and adults with the help, encouragement, dedication and commitment of fully qualified teachers to achieve the best possible results. We want to offer something exceptional!

Director of Programmes Wayne Smith

Hi, my name is Wayne Smith and I hail from the City of Ottawa in the province of Ontario, in Canada.

I began my formal English Language teacher training in 2001 when I undertook a TESOL training programme with the International TESOL College (Ottawa, Canada, and Houston, Texas). When I qualified, I went with my wife and daughter to teach at a language school in Seoul, South Korea. It was at this time that I received my certification as an English With A Smile (EWAS) teacher. I have taught at all levels of this amazing programme (which is offered at King's English) and trained new EWAS teachers too.

My wife and I arrived in Singapore in July 2003 and I accepted a position as a programme consultant with a local company. The position allowed me to work with local students in the field of eco/nature education and to combine my love of the outdoors with training and teaching.

During this time, I undertook a Bachelor of Education (English as a Foreign Language) degree from International TESOL College. Part of the requirements for the degree was the completion of a practicum and I fulfilled this by working for several months with students from a wide variety of countries in the English Second Language Department of a local International School. Upon completion of the degree, I accepted a position teaching classes for students with special needs from the Primary 1 to Primary 6 level at the Child Guidance Clinic at Singapore General Hospital.

In 2005, I began working with King's English as a lecturer in the English Language Preparatory Programme at the local campus of an Australian University. We also teach English at the Institute of Mental Health C Child Guidance Services at Singapore General Hospital.

I have enjoyed my time in Singapore by becoming highly involved in the Canadian community here and have served on the executive committee for three years. Also, I have been President of the Canadian Association of Singapore for the last two years.

In my free time, I love to travel. I also enjoy visiting interesting places in Singapore, like Pulau Ubin, Labrador Park and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Further hobbies include swimming and biking. One of my other joys of Singapore is wandering the city and trying all the various hawker centres C great food!
